8 Small Things You Should Clean Every Day for a Noticeably Tidier Home
Cleaning a little every day goes a long way.
They say a little can go a long way, and this especially applies to cleaning. Tackling just a few key spots each day can make your home feel noticeably cleaner, fresher, and more put-together—without requiring a major time commitment. But where should you start?
We asked the pros to weigh in. Here are eight things you should clean every day in most homes, according to pro cleaners.
01 – Dirty Dishes
We all get tired after dinner, so it can be hard to find the motivatation, but if you can only clean one thing daily, it should be the dishes. This is because leftover food is an open invitation for pests to visit.
“You want to get rid of what attracts ants, smells, and bacteria,” says Claudia Meneses, CEO and founder of AvantiGreen Eco Cleaning. “Getting rid of kitchen residue should keep it clean, healthy, and spotless.”
She also notes that dirty dishes can make your home smelly, too. “Take five minutes at night to wash your dishes, so you can have a peaceful morning,” Meneses says.
02 – Bathroom Vanities
One spot to give a little bit of love every day? Your bathroom vanity. “Another area that deserves daily love is the bathroom counters and sink,” Meneses says. “A daily wipe to remove toothpaste, makeup, and soap scum keeps everything from turning into crust.”
Fortunately, this doesn’t take too much effort. “Spend two minutes per day to clean this area, and your home will look extra clean,” Meneses adds.
03 – Floors
You don’t need to overdo it, but according to Meneses, if you have kids, pets, or both, a good daily sweep or vacuum session prevents debris from scratching your floors or sticking to your feet. This is particularly a smart idea if you have allergies.
04 – Piles of Dirty Clothes on the Floor
Nothing looks sloppier than a pile of dirty clothes on the floor of your bedroom or bathroom (AKA floordrobe!). So Logan Taylor, founder of The Dazzle Cleaning Company, recommends putting that pile where it belongs—in the hamper.
Toss dirty clothes in the hamper, but if they aren’t too dirty and still wearable, then fold or leave them neatly on that special chair for clothes, Taylor recommends. “Or hang them back up with the other clean clothes—it’ll be okay!”
05 – Kids’ Spaces
Kids are great, but they can create major messes daily—from piles of toys to that one random Lego left in the entryway that you’ll probably step on with bare feet. If you’ve got kids or pets, put their toys, books, shoes, bags, and coats away.
“If there’s no time for that, shuffle it all to a corner or two,” Taylor says. “Perfection isn’t a virtue, and this quick fix reduces chaos.”
06 – Mail and Paper Clutter
A bunch of junk mail sitting around can look super sloppy, so Taylor suggests taking a minute or two to tackle this. “Do a quick sweep of papers and mail,” Taylor says. “Stack what you’re keeping.”
07 – Beds
Your mom probably told you to always make your bed in the morning—and she was right. After all, if you start the day tidy, you’re more likely to end it tidy as well. It’s a tiny hassle, but just remember it doesn’t even need to take a minute!
“Make your bed, but don’t spend more than 30 seconds on it, unless that’s already part of your routine,” Taylor says. “A quick fluff goes a long way.”
08 – Trash
Lastly, Meneses advises taking out the trash daily. “Your nose will thank you,” she says.
